What should you do when your stuff has mold on it? Clean or throw away? Use our guide to figure out when household items can be cleaned of mold or when they need to be thrown away.
- For clothing, clean with hot water or non-fragranced detergent or dry clean. If water damaged with visible mold growth or musty smells then throw away.
- For soft porous items, wash with hot water with non-fragranced detergent. If water damaged with visible mold growth or musty smells then throw away.
- For mattresses & upholstered furniture, vacuum with a HEPA vacuum. If water damaged with visible mold growth or musty smells then throw away.
- For carpets & rugs, vacuum with a HEPA vacuum. If water damaged with visible mold growth or musty smells then throw away.
- For finished wood surfaces, clean thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and/or HEPA vacuum. Only if water damaged, rotted, or musty smells then throw away.
- For smooth non-porous items, wipe with a soft cloth using non-fragranced detergent. No need to throw away unless physically damaged.
- For books & paper, dust with a microfiber cloth or vacuum with a HEPA vacuum. No need to throw away unless physically damaged.
- For appliances & electronics, clean all accessible areas thoroughly using a microfiber cloth or non-fragranced detergent. No need to throw away unless water or physically damaged.
